UPDATED REVIEW (Original Review below)Since my first review, I bought another three copies to give as gifts to different groups of friends. One of those three books had the printing problem that some other reviewers have identified. The opening puzzle does use images with several levels of darkness - some are very light. However, four or five pages of one of the three books had pictures so light that my friends couldn't make out the image. (It'll be obvious if you're missing an entire image based on the instructions of the puzzle.)I ordered a replacement, which arrived without any printing issues, so we swapped out the bad pages and sent them back with the bad book. It's sad to see poor reviews due to a printing issue and people giving up after such an experience. I can't say I wouldn't do the same. But having completed it, and seeing the fun that my friends are having, the book still deserves a 5-Star rating despite one book having printing issues.Original Review:Amazing. I am blown away by the amount of fun packed into this book. The further I got into the book, the more appreciation I had for the meticulous planning that went into it. I highly recommend it and I plan to order a couple more for friends. At the start, I cringed as I contemplated tearing out that first page, trying to justify leaving it in the book. (It's not like the author would know!) But, the book has one immutable rule: Follow Instructions. Oh, the agony! With a guilty heart (and a look of absolute horror from my 6yo niece that could only be interpreted as "Everything you have ever taught me is a LIE!"), I held my breath, and tore.Over the subsequent hours and days, liberated pages flew about the room in a frenzy of tape, scissors, shoes, and ducks. Finally, our exhilarated team emerged victorious! We felt as if we had conquered an "Escape the Room" event, without ever leaving the house.Things I LOVE about this book:-It's accessible. Don't be intimidated. I'm not sure how he (the author) does it, but all the puzzles were very challenging, while never feeling overwhelming.-It's original. These puzzles are fresh. Even those that look traditional have an extra something that makes them stand out. (I wish I could tell more but I don't want to spoil anything!)-It's suspenseful! Our group's collective thought process: Stage 1: "Wait, what are we supposed to do?" Stage 2: "He (the author) can't POSSIBLY want us to do X" Stage 3: "I can't believe we're doing X. There's no way this is going to work" Stage 4: "We definitely messed something up. Let's go back." Stage 5: "Wait, there it is!" And you realize, everything you were looking for was right there with you all along. (This cycle repeats itself many times.)Advice:I wish that I had tracked our time better, but with a team of three, we completed it in about 5, 4-hour sessions. If I could do it over again, I would have gathered more people and tried to knock it out in a single day.

Incredible! It took a group of us (4-8 people) at least 10 hours to complete! The first thing Roy asks you to do is cut half of the book out to solve the first puzzle. This leads you down a path of puzzles hidden in a newly assembled "book". It's like something out of Indiana Jones or Da Vinci Code. Some considerations:1. There isn't an answer key. At a couple points you'll need to take a leap of faith and pray you're on the right path. (For example, any puzzle which requires cuts is hard to undo.)2. Two puzzles in particular were really tough for us to complete. We'd have all the information necessary to solve a puzzle and stare at it for a couple hours to "see" the solution. Think... the most impossible word search you've ever done.3. Incredible depth in the book. It's easy to wander off the intended path and get lost with little details. We found a few hidden messages but make sure you (mostly) save them for after finishing. Any accidental destruction of the book will make completion super difficult.Have fun and good luck!

My husband and I got this book because we are fans of puzzle games of all kinds. In the past we have played lots of board games and hidden object games on our iPad, but we wanted something that would allow us to play together without having to have a screen in front of us. This book intrigued us, and we are so glad we took a chance on it.There are several different types of puzzles contained in the book, from pure logic to picture phrases to crosswords. None were impossible to solve, but none were so easy as to be trivial. We spent several evenings and weekends working through them, and in the end found it to be hugely satisfying. If you enjoy puzzles - you will delight in this book!

This book kept five extremely clever friends and myself engaged and entertained for 6 straight hours. Best $18 I've spent in a while. I heartily recommend it as a gift for puzzle-loving friends or ducks with OCD.Be warned, the puzzles are HARD. Solving with a bunch of friends is strongly recommended. I would not have enjoyed it nearly as much on my own.The only down side I found was that solving involved tearing out lots of pages. I feel that this book would be even better in ring-or-spiral-binder form.

Update: Changed review to a 3 temporarily as apparently Amazon WILL exchange this book even after pages are removed. I have not confirmed this, but if they do this eliminates the biggest concern (printing errors noticed after you've destroyed the book). I would still advise anyone purchasing to approach the Opening Puzzle in this way..when it tells you that you need to tear out 64 pages, and that each these pages has FOUR images on it, that is true, and if you find pages with what appears to be 3 or 2 images, or even a BLANK page, process a return/exchange before attempting that opening puzzle.ORIGINAL TEXT: I can only rate the product I received, and I'm told that not everyone has this issue, but I was also told I'm not unique. The opening puzzle requires you to rip out 64 pages that each are SUPPOSED to have FOUR images on them. Because of a problem with print quality, many of these pages do not have a complete set of images, and one page is 100% BLANK rendering it useless....but of course once you notice this, the book can't be returned to Amazon because you've torn out scores of pages. The puzzle can sort of be solved anyway, and the author was VERY helpful, but this wasted a ton of time and left me wondering when the next puzzle would stump me not because of my own wits, but because of poor quality. I don't argue with those who gave it high ratings as they were probably lucky enough to get a good printing. I really wish there was a way to exchange it...if you get this book look through it ALL first and before tearing ANY pages out check that all the 'four images' pages truly have FOUR...if not, process a return while you can.
