I bought this book because I have always been interested in the culture of Polynesia, being born in the region myself. The book is a fantastic glimpse into the British colonial mind set in the late 1800's, as the book features heavy dialogue of terms and language used then...but not so much used now.For the price, it's a good read if you like to enjoy reading older literature or want an older view on Polynesian culture from the British point of view. The pictures drawn then still have meaning now, as they are examples of a culture nearly pushed to extinction.However, the culture still exists when the British Empire does not. It's definitely worth a look at, or rather a reading into.
This is a wonderful primary source book for anyone interested in the Maori people or tattooing practices in general. I absolutely loved this book and would recommend it to anyone and everyone as a foundational book on Maori tattooing. I bought two copies of this book, one for my personal collection and one for my professor who was involved in a major project I did on this subject. Get it, you will not regret it!
